Julia Kent
Venue: Miss Peapod's, Penryn
Date: 28th May 2008
Time: 8:00pm
Two nights with… Julia Kent Of Antony & The Johnsons With support from Simon Drinkwater Wednesday May 28th at Miss Peapod’s, Penryn, Cornwall Thursday May 29th at The Acorn Arts Centre, Penzance, Cornwall “Delay is Kent's beautiful debut of multitracked cello music. It's baffling to think that there's only one person working on this record, it sounds every bit as if a full ensemble were at work. Kent's solo work is characterised by a clear knowledge of modern classical music and a very lyrical, often cinematic set of composition principles. The opening chords of 'Gardermoen' confirm that Kent has a particular knack for a kind of aching romanticism, full of rich melodicism and detailed arrangements.” Boomkat Julia Kent was born in Vancouver, Canada, studied cello at Indiana University, Bloomington, and lives in New York. She was an original member of Rasputina, who released two records on Columbia and toured throughout North America. After leaving Rasputina she joined Antony and the Johnsons, playing on and contributing string arrangements to the group's Mercury Prize-winning record I Am a Bird Now, and touring Europe, North America, Australia, and Brazil, including shows at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall and numerous television appearances. In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony and the Johnsons, she has performed and/or recorded with many other artists and ensembles, including the Angels of Light, Ben Weaver, Burnt Sugar, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Donovan, Larsen, William Parker, and Angela McCluskey.. As a solo artist, she has performed at the Donau Festival in Austria, the LEM festival in Barcelona, and at venues throughout Europe and the U.S. Some words said by the press, of Julia’s album… “an all-instrumental affair, mixing beautiful melodies with found sound...the songs will lull your mind into a beautiful place, and it's easy to understand why Antony has called upon her to add her creative voice to the Johnsons.” Press Play, Record “While most would choose to crash head-on into the oncoming din of life, Kent implores us to seek a respite from the loud outer world and seek shelter within the serene. Delay's only artistic statement is found in Kent's protest of hurry.” Electric Voice Phenomenon Simon Drinkwater will be performing a support set at both shows with contrebasse player Alex. Though known for pastoral, lyric driven finger-picked acoustic songs that hum and drone like a colony of bees through a wood, Simon and Alex have recently been experimenting with a more open ended free jazz/raga inspired style. Taking a broader range of influences than any other acoustic player I am aware of, Simon’s majestic chord changes are not something you could ever confuse with the legion of nu-folk hum-drum songwriters. Click on his name, or here to visit his myspace, and some recorded songs. Tickets are £6 each night Tickets for the Miss Peapod’s show are available from Jam, High st, Falmouth. Miss Peapod’s, Penryn & The Poly on 01326 212300 Tickets for the Penzance show are available from The Acorn Arts Centre on 01736 365520

How wrong we were, thankfully! John and Willy have asked for this to be a seated event - so tickets will be limited.
